Early Morning Blues Poem by M J Carpenter

Early Morning Blues

Early morning blues
So bright in their urgency they are a crisp neon
As I spy the pillow end, when eyes like lion jaws
Open in anger.
I feel a rush from the back pull me over
The time when the last to wake in me
Is the lies and mirrors that spin me enough
With the help of life’s neat little distractions
Giggles
Women
Men as friends
And glorious sky above
Bathing me, in cosy numbness.
They are too late, too early
When the hurly burly of truth is bare:
:
You have nothing to look forward too.
You slept alone.
You lost one more night
One closer to the final
With no dream witnesses
Permuting hope. Changing
In my head at least, the corrupt hedging
Of the world.

As the motors kick in, I feel enough alive.
With the white horror fading
They take over:

Today is not the day to worry about.
Unknown breakfast awaits.
You slept well with no terror
You lost one night of weird repeats.
Your'e one closer to being with her.
Hope is a fool.
Like luck, you make your own.
