Dreams Of A Lover Poem by Amy Sutton

Dreams Of A Lover

I’d have you
As my bittersweet muse;
My pained jewel;
My back-pocket love,
Tucked away in some secret world
Caught between the glare of sunshine
In a leafy sky,
Where the wind is your
Warm breath
Upon my neck,
And the tides turn
As we do;
Gods in our personal infinity.

I’d have you
As my human clay
To mould
And cling to –
To run my hands across,
Feeding every smooth line
And hard contour
Into my hungry palms;
To undo you
With the gentlest touch,
And feel mountains shudder
In your sigh.

I’d have you
As my Adonis in disguise;
A God enamoured
From afar,
Who clothes himself
In your flesh
To steal my breath
Between heartbeats,
And awe
At my glitterbroken windchime soul.

I’d have you
As my tamed monster,
My wild and danger
Bloodpulse loud in my ears,
Barely contained,
Tail lashing
At the bars,
To take me to
The razorblade edge,
Defenceless to
Your fangs...
Only to have you lay
The genlest kiss
Upon my trembling neck.

But most of all,
I’d have you
In the quiet after the storm
Or the lull before daybreak,
Lost soft-focus
In your arms,
Rocked by your breathing;
Where you hold me
Like some precious thing
And whisper
“I love you”
So gently
It breaks my heart.
