Do You Have Any? Poem by GRANT FRASER

Do You Have Any?

Words I don't even
think I've got enough left
to wipe my behind with,

and yet I want the simple
one's to stand up as straight,
as possible,

I'm relying on the simplicity
of someone who doesn't have
enough paint left,

or colours the whole wide world
with the only one he knows,

here's a self portrait - I suppose,

I've got a big nose, ye know!
an extra bit where it got broken,
by some leather jacketed yokel fist,

you see I keep scribbling still,
and like most, I take them out
again, then plunge back into the mirror,

supernatural ideas
flowing up out of my socks,
these cheap stripy things
I got in Primark,

do you land like a space ship
in the dark?

coming down the shaky
ladder gets easier,

blank and black, in the blue,
where are you,
who are you trying to contact?

life, and especially death,

it would be nice, if I could just
have one great big enormous thought,
that encompasses all my strivings
and particular worries,

that I have not wasted all
my time and effort,

self meaning - I really need to know?
