Death Called My Name... Poem by David Lewis Paget

Death Called My Name...

Rating: 3.5

Death called my name, and I replied,
‘I'm not quite ready now.
There must be others, more deserving
Of your time, somehow.
I find I still have much to do
Or leave the world in debt,
For instance, all the many women
I've not slept with yet.

‘You've followed me for far too long,
I've felt you on my tail,
Your hot breath on my neck, though I
Tried not to leave a trail.
My health is not the best, it's true,
But there are some far worse,
The great decision's up to you
But you should take them first.'

‘I noticed when you call my name
There's some disparity,
With other names almost the same
You used a second 't',
Go back and check the register
You'll find some other guy,
Who hides behind my name, he's game,
But you should ask him ‘why? ''

‘You've stalked the world for far too long
In you there's little grace,
You've taken everyone I loved,
You give no breathing space.
Don't worry, I shall let you know
When I am done with life,
Should you want one to practice on
You might try my ex-wife.'
