Dawn Breaks Poem by Lydia Martin

Dawn Breaks

Morning wakes, still,
Under velvet curtain of night.
Lying in wait
Daylight creeps
Like a sinful angel of darkness.
Night’s luxurious fabric
Clings tight
To its daily routine
Unseen by fingers
Of enquiring light.

Enemies of nature
Grow strong,
Ever present
in the envelope
Of black.

Metallic monsters
Of species unknown
Glare bug-eyed
Into shadowy depths.
Curves of motion
Carve the landscape with
Careful graphs of progress.

Electric stars of sublimation
Teeter on the blink
Over blue and green hue
Of words other worldly
Mocking the moons extinction.

Still the colour of dawn
Lies dormant.
The translucent reign of night
Grips tight like a glove of fear.

Unconscious moments drift
Into the terminal void.
Breached at last,
A silky gown of Turkish blue,
Covers the earth
Like a royal eiderdown.

Shapes of masked mystery
Assume new roles.
Dawn struck fingers
Leave nothing untouched.
With slow disintegration
Facile jewels vanish.
A new definition
Defeats fear of the
Untimely cloak
That grips our nation.
Forests of Turkish blue and
Fields of purple delight
Resume their yesterday
As they fade to grey.
