Customs To Value Poem by Lawrence S. Pertillar

Customs To Value

What standards are met.
To believe them kept.
And set to project,
Customs to value.

The only traditions left,
To uphold and respect.
Seem to be the holidays.
Many anticipate to await,
Getting those days off from work.
To celebrate.
With the meaning of them,
Many would rather not to be reminded.

What standards are met.
To believe them kept.
And set to project,
Customs to value.

Good credit to keep.
To enable more debt.
Impressions to make,
Done to do to be accepted.
Vacations to take to escape from routine.
A love to gossip.
About someone to demean.
Passing judgement on others.
Whether known or not.
Or before have seen.

The only traditions left,
To uphold and respect.
Seem to be the holidays.
Many anticipate to await,
Getting those days off from work.
To celebrate.
With the meaning of them,
Many would rather not be reminded.

Yet...
Customs to value,
Are mentioned more in need to protect.
By those who protest,
Too many of the 'others' are receiving...
Rights and entitlements,
They deserve.
But...
Disparities and daily humiliation,
With more this they can expect to get.
Are these the customs to value,
Those who perceive themselves...
Better than the rest.
Who are subjected to receive even less.

And,
Those customs to value.
With them to reflect,
Obtained to maintain.
Who upholds those standards kept.
And why are they left,
To allow disrespected...
By they very ones doing this done,
Proving themselves...
Divisive, thoughtless and self serving.
