Chekwala Life Poem by Monesh Kumar

Chekwala Life

I am Salmon
The great swimmer
With scales beautiful
And silvery-white
Which upon hitting the light
Makes me glimmer

Now I am old
Yet my memories
Bright as gold
I would like to share
The fruit of my patience
As my life
Has a fascinating lesson

I remember very well
The waters that I dwell
And the passion
For me to be free
Down the stream
In the open sea

The wide blue waters
And the cruel salmon eaters
My whole life
Was like on the edge
Of a knife
Yet now all grown up
I was there
Surviving them all
Until I heard
Or felt
My home call

Up I made my way
Through the waters
So vindictive
That tore my fins
And my scales
So attractive
Finally
I reached my domicile
Battered and bruised
As if o just dodged a missile

Here
I passed my fingerlings
For the next generation
And now
I am waiting
Waiting unwearyingly
As my soul
And my body
Prepared
For separation

This is a great and inspired poem. The Salmon represents to me the rythm and purpose of all life. To respond to the urgency of replication . It is also the great symbol to me of the circle of life which is to respond to the challenge of living by overcoming all obstacles and then to lie awating in the warm sunlit pond for the end to come reassured by the birthing fry that the efforts of living are to produce life.
