Change Poem by Shelcy Joseph

Change

All my life I've tried to run away from change
The change that occurs without warning
Hits you like a blast of wind
And takes you out of your routine
But as life went on and on
I realized change is inevitable
In fact, we have to see every day like a chance to change
To change what's not right
Overcome our fear of the night
And let out the light
As I look back over the events of this year
My mind fills with memories
Of incredible moments
How was life before?
How is it now?
What began as a fantasy of light and space and room
Where discussions, tears and laughters could bloom
Evolved to yearning for the opportunity
To give life a reason to be
This sudden change
Concludes now with me, far from my dear home in my dear country
Wondering why it all happened so abruptly
How it fell apart so quickly
It also painfully reminds me
That nothing should be taken for granted
The sweet scent of my mom's coffee
The rumbling sounds of my dad's car
The wild, infectious giggles of my siblings
All these little things that give meaning to life
I find myself confronted with all sorts of conflicting feelings
Pride in my family
Gratitude for what we have
But also, a heartbreaking sense of just how life is fragile
But life as we know it
Is an eternal cycle
So we ought to fight life
Days are numbered
We ought to keep struggling along as best as we can
To become the people we are meant to be
To make our dreams become reality
And be truly happy
That way, we can leave the best of a life
That will go on endlessly
