Caribbean Pride Poem by Leslie Alexis

Caribbean Pride

The mark of the slave was put to the grave,
And the black man ruled his own god-fearing nation
Now, and tracking back to the times of the plantation
Standing strong on the backs of the wisdom of Sizzla Kalonji
Hailing Jah, in the footstep of predecessors, like Bob Marley
Attaining empresses by the lyrics of Lucky Dubie
I’ve been a bad man, fire pon funny man since Bounty
Was a new-bie. America the great, still a backward, dem a just track we.

We, Caribbean, one nation, full of equality
Where the black man is the major, and not, the minority... Where people
Live in love, and eyes are cleared of obscurities. Hand in hand we can walk
Together... over-comers of poverty… Christian nation, hailing Yeshua with all sovereignty. We are, not trying to be. Not no wanna-bes.
Wanna be at peace, have no wars, live in tranquility.
Every nation in the world, want to be just like we,
Realizing that where the black man rules, all are free.

Free from oppression of the weak, and mass injustices.
Mass injustices, where the rich oppresses the poor. The poor.
Where the poor is subjected to less, and less and less. Even when best
Is given… oppression, undermining hard work, gives the weak, less.
But not so in our nation… Where hard work, and sweating brows fuel rewards
Even so, through my laboring tongue, I put down gun, and swords
Exemplifying the determination of the Caribbean man,
Determination that led to birth of our great islands.

Great islands, with lovely black and white sandy beaches:
Fine weather, like the lovely ladies. Ladies, not bitches. Curviest
The world has even seen. Each one in her own right, a royal queen. Empress.
Gorgeous. Sexy. Destined to impress. Few words can express…
“She is my lady… and she is a beauty… she makes me go crazy…
The way she moves me… both night and day…”
She makes me never want to turn my page, being forever young in her
I’ll never age. She’s my sexy nymph-Caribbean flower.
