But, Lord Poem by William Kruse

But, Lord

Dear Lord,

Well, here we go again; thus begins another day.

We know we should be grateful
that we woke up this morning without smelling roses
and hearing eulogies,
but Lord...

We know we should be grateful
for the myriad aches and pains of aging,
because at least they mean we didn’t die young,
but Lord...

We know we should be grateful
for the sound of rap music from our neighbor’s boom box at 3: 00 a.m.,
because it means we can still hear somewhat,
but Lord....

We know we should be grateful
for the bland and restrictive nature of our diet
because it means we don’t have to be fed intravenously,
but Lord....

We know we should be grateful
that we’re balding, because it means
we have that much less grooming to worry about,
but Lord....

We know we should be grateful
that we can keep our eyes and ears on the nightstand and our teeth in a cup, because it means we could afford to have the real ones replaced,
but Lord....

Finally, Lord, we really are grateful
for all these things and much, much more,
so please forgive
our whiny “buts”.

And for Your grandeur,
Your grace and Your goodness,
we give You the glory

AMEN.

Why do we have so much trouble concentrating on what we have rather than what we have not. An humble prayer and a powerful write, Bill. Thanks. Richard
