Bullfinch Poem by Paul Reed

Bullfinch

Bullfinch,
You look me up and look me down
Dressed in your red nightgown,
Slender legs poised, ready to fly
Rocking and swaying in the breeze,
No cage to encapsulate your sky
Or your home amongst the trees;

Bullfinch,
Over the stubbly fields you wing
Forgetting me and everything,
The stubbly fields stretch below
That let the sun finally sink,
Your world lived under the rainbow
With the ditch your place to drink;

Bullfinch,
You disappear from my sight
In your carefree bounding flight,
Your breast a magical red flame
Beating between rapid wing,
Life just a joyous game
In the brief word that you sing.
