Brokenness Poem by Courtney Ferguson

Brokenness

her body has cracks and pieces missing like a concrete sidewalk or road. she'd often find herself crying herself to sleep because of you and what you did and no other boy or man will be able to fix her but herself and time. she scars her body in hopes that doing so will make your distant hand marks and fingertips go away. she starves herself so that in other people's eyes, she's pretty and skinny like every other girl out there. her doctor labels her anorexic because she's way too skinny for her age. people see her in the streets and compliment her on her look but don't know the struggles she's been through. they say she could be a model with her height and size but that's not something that can't happen. that can't happen because of the scars that liter her stomach, thighs, and arms. it can't happen because her skin is suction cupped to her bones like gum to the underside of a school desk. but you can't blame her for this because in reality, it's your fault. you're the one that derailed her train off the tracks and into a building. you are the one that set her on this course because yeah you left scars on her body, but she still wanted to be pretty in your eyes. that's all she ever wanted and needed, was for you to call her pretty, beautiful, gorgeous, cute, etc. but it didn't happen obviously because look at her now, damaging her body because now it's the only thing she knows how to do, and it's something she'll always remember. so while she cries herself to sleep at night, please sit and think about what you could've done to prevent this and ways you could've done to stop it before it go too worse.
