Big Carp Poem by Juan Olivarez

Big Carp

Rating: 5.0

There's a big old carp down below,
He's not good to eat, but I want to know,
If I can bring him out for a foto op,
But he stays on the bottom, and never comes up.

Mixed up some bran flakes and some Big Red,
I hope he is still down there, and has'nt fled,
Got a salt water reel, and a big long pole,
Big enough to reach him, in his deep dark hole.

Sitting in the shade, of a hackberry tree,
Eating a sandwich, my wife made for me,
Watching the sun come up in the east,
And hoping and praying I can hook the beast.

I think that he's laughing at me, down below,
Thinking that sooner or later, I'll just have to go.
I've tried different baits, that he just ignores,
Even catfish bait and some plastic lures.

And he just continues swimming down there,
Staring up through the water, We're really some pair.
Playing our mind games, day in and day out,
I might get me a club, and just give him a clout.

6/9/10 29 palms ca.

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

A beautifully written poem that also takes me back to my youth. A big gar lived in the small stream near our home and I wanted to land him desperately, but never could. The battle was always there, but he was to smart for me. Like you have said before, we have traveled similar trails through life and our poetry attest to that. Very good work Juan and will read more later. Your friend Lynn
