Beneath A Blanket Poem by Dr. Charles A Stone

Beneath A Blanket

beneath a blanket
of myriad stars
i lie quietly
upon a sandy shore
having forsaken
the cold granite
far above the waters
to rest here
near the primal stew

and where i rest
upon the shore
the lake lies calm
pinned to earth
by the pixie dust
of distant stars
that still the wind
as they float
across the heavens

what wind there is
carries to my ears
a faunal symphony
as a loon calls
for evening's debut
in hooted exhortation
hesitates
then calls again
in the persistent silence

when the first star heeds
the loon's forlorn call
the oboes and flutes
of frogs and toads
the cymbals of fish
and the rat-a-tat
of nature's drummer
trumpet o'er the water
echo in the nearby forest

and still i lie
upon the shore
beneath a blanket
of myriad stars
and a newly risen moon
listening and watching
as the milky way
swirls across
the darkening sky
