Being Frank Sinatra

What I wouldn't give
to be Frankie Blue Eyes
for a lonnnnngggg day.

To sing:
'when somebody loves you
it's no good unless he loves you
-allllllll the way'
to a lounge fulla
lushes and losers and lizards.

To say:
'Hey babe.
Ever swing
a ding ding
with a chick? '

To play
at the Desert Inn
with Dino,
and Sammy,
and Champagne Tony Lema,
and make Lawford
and Bishop
and Rickles

To burn
and with
To screw Bacall
while Bogey

To party
in Palm Springs
with JFK,
…..and pimp for him, too.
To slug guys
twice my size
for giving me a funny look
or maybe
for nothin'.
too terrified
by Sammy G
to fight back.

To wow bobbysoxers,
have an Adam's apple,
lose the apple,
make a comeback,
make comeback after comeback,
go outta style
come back in
go out again,
wear a bad hairpiece,
give up on the 'piece,
lose the pipes,
sing magnificently

in the last years
just makin' it
on pure style
on phrasing,
on invisible
on croaking,
on allusions
to style
gone out of style
yet somehow back in:
narra' ties
pipestem pants
nosepicker shoes
-Making people
see the invisible
hear the inaudible
get with
a real gone cat.

Go out
a winner
with my whole world
already dead
and buried
along with my zest for
life's pleasures- grand AND simple:
the roar of the crowd,
a chick,
or Chivas,
or scarin' the shit outta some nobody.
Can't sing
or hear
or feel
or see
never woulda believed it
am so

and go back
to being

Poem of the Day

poet Emily Jane Brontë

I am the only being whose doom
No tongue would ask no eye would mourn
I never caused a thought of gloom
A smile of joy since I was born

In secret pleasure - secret tears
