Before You Fell Trees Poem by Tapera Makadho

Before You Fell Trees

Before you fell trees
Take stock of their branch and stalk
Count the nests thereupon
Whether eyrie or of dove.

Before you fell trees
Take stock of their branch and stalk
Who roosts and perches thereupon
Cuckoo or falcon
Dove or pigeon?

Before you fell trees
Count whom they proffer shed and shade
Snake or not?

Before you fell trees
Take stock of their branch and stalk
Count pendent branches thereupon
Falling stumps may crush you.

Before you fell big trees
Take stock of their branch and stalk
Count every cat and dog thereupon
Lest you tumble and trample
In the stampede.

Nice poem. I am forever fascinated by trees and their place in our lives. They hold such strength, beauty, and longevity. As you write, they also provide shelter, not only for us, but for so many animals. I always feel sad and wistful when I see a tree go down, either by design, or by nature. Thanks for sharing your poem. Well done.
