Barn, Awake (Triptych Ii) Poem by Kevin Moore

Barn, Awake (Triptych Ii)

I walked along a well blazed path and
came upon the barn -
seen earlier from field afar
its stand midst trees in splendid dress
seemed not as lovely nor as proud as
what I now saw shaded in by
board and paper, nail and rope.

I caught my breath at once to see
one silent, aging, open door -
imagined I a time now passed when
children from the hayloft swung and
lowing of the cattle filled these empty stalls now
wrapped inside these ancient, battered,
(black and blistered) broken walls.

A glint of sunlight caught my eye from
what remained of windows past -
a shard of memories stabbing out to
grab and twist and shroud the eye –
now wind allowed free reign throughout this
busy, spacious (laughing once) now
empty, quiet, barren place.

A canopy of history and colors rare
surround this place from time before,
seen earlier from journey’s start still
shrouded in the early mist of what can be
but still awaiting witness to what is -
called along a well blazed path until
I came upon the barn.
