Back There In The Fields Poem by Francis Duggan

Back There In The Fields

Young birds in their nests chirp in bush, tree and hedgerow
Back there in the fields where Finnow waters flow
On towards the great Blackwater babbling it's way
In fancy I walk on it's green banks today.

The lark o'er the rushes a small speck in the sky
Is carolling as upwards and upwards he fly
Till in the gray clouds of morning he does disappear
Yet his beautiful music though fading I hear.

The countryside lush and green after recent Spring showers
And the old fields are decked in Nature's wildflowers
The air full of birdsong and the buzzing of bees
And cattle lying in the sunshine chewing their cuds at their ease.

The hawthorns are resplendent in their white blooms of the May
And in the leafy groves songbirds sing all the day
And buttercups bloom by the clear mountain rill
That babbles it's way down the field by the hill.
