Autumn's Birth Poem by David Wood

Autumn's Birth

Rating: 5.0

Summer's bright face has grown old
Trees that have pulled in CO2 are now
Tired. Sun and rain, their food, now
Unbalanced. Sugar sweet delights
Gone for another year.

Morning now brings an unwelcome
Breakfast, even the robins shiver at the
Hard Earth. Somnolent squirrels gather
Nuts in monotonous languor. Torpid
Insects shiver in their homes.

Sleepy trees become dormant and
Change. Internal processes seals the
Leaf, making it thirsty. Leaves blush with
Colour, a final gift to nature, then kiss
Their host, and life, goodbye.

First frosts highlight woodland cobwebs
Dropping spiders and melliferous insects
Now delicately covered in golden blankets
Of dead leaves that line the woodland floor.
Autumn, a prelude to winter, has arrived.
