Autumn Poem by Tom Billsborough

Autumn

Rating: 2.3

A stone arcs into the water.
Circles within circles ripple
Distorting the mirror.
As I stand upon the shore.
And the fallen leaves
Are gathered in circles
Flame-red, orange and yellow
To enhance the ritual.
And sun's red circle
Commands a hollow sky.
I light two candles
Intone a gentle orison
To hallow this fruitful season.
Let us fill our granaries and stores!
For soon a white wind
Will starve the meadows.
And we must survive
The necessary shadows
Which lengthen as we stand
Between the flickering flames.

The fallen leaves of multi color and shade circling over the water and the ripples caused by their movement distorting your image.....! . I can visualize the scene! Beautiful description of Autumn! Like squirrels gathering nuts in their granary for the winter, let us also store up things in the harvest season in anticipation of Nature's season of starvation!

It was written as a Pagan chant to accompany a series about the various Pagan festivals. My Yule Tide one ended up on a Christmas card with an illustration by my brother and sent by him to many of his friends in the Art world. It was after the unbelievable responses I got that gave me the idea of joining Poem Hunter. The Yule Tide one is a faithful recreation of the Festival.
