As The Time Goes… Poem by Bill Galvin

As The Time Goes…

A drive to the grave that has all the flowers;
I don’t visit here that often or that long,
Because at home I remember her living,
Here there is only a reminder that she’s gone.
At home I talk to her in passing,
Here the tears garble the transmission.

So, I’m on my way to see my Mom, Audrey;
She fainted yesterday while eating out,
And I’m seeing her in hospital tonight;
And Deb told me to remind her
That when her Mom passed away in 2010,
As Audrey comforted her,
Deb said, “You’re my Mom, now.”
When the tears abated, we all knew
The silent bond between those two.

Mom, she looks good, BP is fair; AFIB gone;
She was glad to know I’m back,
Tho she saw me a few days ago.
We talked of drinking fluids, remembering pills;
I said there’s a new sheriff in town;
One more call to bug her to take her meds.

She seemed to grasp it; “I’ll drink more,
Don’t want to be taken here again.”
I reminded her what Deb said; that she loved her;
“Oh, I loved Deb, too.”
She wants you to keep care, stay around a while.
“Then that’s what I’ll do.”
