Another, On The Same Subject Poem by Rees Prichard

Another, On The Same Subject

THOU Rock of my salvation, lend thy aid!
Arm me in all thy panoply complete,
And leave no single member unarray'd,
Lest the foul fiend thy warrior shou'd defeat!

Upon my head let Hope's gay helm be plac'd -
My breast with Equity's bright corselet grace -
The belt of Penitence gird round my waist -
And, on my feet, the Gospel's sandals lace.

Give me, thy word, for a two-edged sword -
The shield of faith, to ward off ev'ry dart,
That Satan throws - and constant pray'r, O Lord!
To force the fell invader from my heart.

Give me assistance bravely to engage
With all the enemies that hem me in,
With ev'ry carnal lust, and Satan's rage,
The world's deceits, and ev'ry deadly sin -

Give me assistance to attack them all,
To break their ranks, and conquer them in fight -
That on my knees I may right humbly fall
To worship thee, like a true son of light :

So shall I march undaunted, ev'ry day,
Beneath thy standard, through the field of death,
And give thee praise, without the least dismay,
O Lord, my God! whilst I have any breath.
