An Utopian Wish Poem by Rajesh Thankappan

An Utopian Wish

Rating: 5.0

I saw the child draw the geographical outline
Of the world with a pencil in her little hand,
Then she proceeded to draw the inner lines
The political boundaries we have etched deep on land.

I hoped that the pencil tip would then and there break
And the world would remain as an entity one
And then there would be no passports or visas one need to take
And we need not jettison our precious resources towards weapons.

I know, on my part, it is just a wishful thinking
For the political boundaries of nations are drawn with arms,
But I still wish that the world could somewhere make a beginning
So that the human race could walk arm in arm.

What a beautiful dream, Rajesh-ji! We have been dreaming this dream since time immemorial; yet, even a trace of its fulfillment is nowhere in sight. We are more divided than ever. (10)
