Amongst The Great Universe Poem by Francis Duggan

Amongst The Great Universe

Amongst the great Universe Planet Earth seems small
In size like a marble is to a football
And though great deeds of great people we well may recall
We are not that really important at all.

To great things in life many of us aspire
And wealthy and successful people we tend to admire
We ought to ask ourselves what defines success
Than to those we look up to are we any less?

For they too are mere mortals just like you and i
They live, eat and drink and they sleep and they die
From the lives of the poorest to the very great
The reaper is not known to differentiate.

On Planet Earth we live for such a short time
And so brief is human life and briefer our prime
Eighty years in time it is not a lengthy spell
And those who reach that age are doing quite well.

Though the World it is quite a big place in our eyes
By the Universe Planet Earth is dwarfed in size
You may own your own bank and ride in a chauffeur driven car
But you are not as important as you think you are.
