Although It Is Night

on the other side of the silent velvet curtain,
the summer rain crackles and trickles
into the night, gathering its varied voices

into muted dance rhythms,
sketching water patterns on a limestone
garden wall where an ancient gnarled pear tree

once leaned, charcoal and black.
