Acetylene Welder Poem by Roger elkin

Acetylene Welder

Nurtured for years on tales of angels,
of gods, of things bringing outward signs
we have gazed on moons, on stars, on suns
and turned our eyes and minds
from such a sight as this – a man
creating universes of his own.

Alone on these dark parabolas of steel
his torch pours out a galaxy
of interstellar activity,
circumvents a new blackhole,
spawns a clutch of asteroids
and highlights a second stellar pole.

Within afternoons he’s outshone
the Great Bear, even old Orion,
and formed fresh constellations
curving through the dark unseen.

Will all his work reach out to touch infinity?

Perhaps his God is even such a one –

each falling down of dusk
a pulling on His mask
to create far stars that shine
beyond limited horizons.

Of such acts as this we formulate theology.

Of such mankind, we make an unsung deity.
Of such acts as this we formulate theology.

Of such mankind, we make an unsung deity.
