Absence Poem by Pat Kunisch

Absence

Have you seen the sunsets lately?
The great expanse of sky, embellished
with all the hues of eventide, in shades
of blues and pinks and greens, mixed
with the colors of autumn harvest.
Framed as within a picture card, a light
from Heaven shines down,
and touches the earth with breathless beauty.
I feel its peaceful warmth
as I drive each eve, going
to places that beacon me.
Life seems well, and
an inner glow lights up my spirit
and brightens my soul.
But the time does come to turn around
and enter the threshold
of my humble home, where
the joy of your presence is gone, replaced
by the unsettling silence of your absence.
The emptiness you left behind is overwhelming,
for in your departure, you took with you
the essence of my love, which now
I can only find in the sunset above.
And in its place, you left me nothing.
