A Voice From The Desert (Words And Music By Dr Ian Inkster March 2017)

A Voice from the Desert (Ian Inkster 2017)

A voice from the desert
Announcing its plans
A voice from the desert
Arousing the clans
Poised in the desert
To make a history that's man's
Telling all folk
Just where to stand.
Amidst hunger and violence
Rising from that listless sand.
Driving us back, driving us, back back back
Before life really began.

Now the first voice out there
Was that of Abraham
A nomad from Ur
Travelling by divine command
Tender even to Sodom
And yet courageous in war
Telling his people
Just what he saw.
For the power of heaven on-side
He gave his son as sacrifice
Driving us back, driving us, back back back
Until men should become mice.

CHORUS
Such voices have been claimed by the charlatans
The smart guys chasing wealth and power
Who dressed in ermine and silk so we could understand
Ones who claim your soul - in the weakening hour.

From a small part of the globe such stories came,
To upset love, to kill and maim,
To tell new truths and make their awful claim,
Seducing all of those who heard their aim.

So great buildings rose from such sandy sounds
Filled with those who claimed to rule the earth.
And the people now prayed down to the ground,
The strong man became the rich man's serf. The rich man's serf

Abraham was rich in livestock,
In his silver and gold
Talking to God as his prophet
Made him repentant yet bold
Accepting all that God said
He did not kill his only son
Telling all those around him
What he would've done...
But when Christ came, no son of Man
Now Faith was a gift all could understand
Driving us back, driving us back, back back,
Reason pushed right underground.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
All of the monotheistic Middle eastern religions centre in some way on charismatic figures who reach out to convert, and all founded religious sects that became enormpusly influential until the present time. Though many of us may relegate God to the diminishing space of what is 'unknown', this is a somewhat distinct category of think than that which is et as sceptical of particular religious beliefs. This song tries to capture the tension, of moral ideologies and mysteries that spranf from tough dester environs in ancient cultures, through to the ermine and the riches of religious establishments. I have written various versions of my chorus that attempt to link up the elements. I provide just one here in this text but sing another.
