A Theme Poem by Elia Michael

A Theme

I don’t know what to write about
I really don’t know what to say
I could say I’ve never had gout
Or it's a funny kind of day

But then I would just be rambling
Talking nonsense for its own sake
Yes I really am scrambling
For a theme, oh my head does ache!

I need a theme for my verses
A subject for my poetry
But my mind is thinking curses
Because my thoughts are too paltry

I do not know what to write of
I do not know what I can say
Maybe I could write of a dove
That I once had which flew away
