A Societal Shame Poem by Sharbaaniranjan Kundu

A Societal Shame

Since many years
I am looking for a groom
for a niece of mine.
I know a meritorious young fellow
who I imagined could be a good groom
for this niece of mine.
But providence would not walk that way.
I do not know what is in store
for this niece of mine
or the imagined groom for her.
I met this boy's parents once
and learnt they would rather
prefer a fair complexioned girl
for their son.
Too bad. In my family too
since my adolescence
I heard my mother
talking of any good-looking girl
with the pre-condition of her being fair.
What a shame I felt
for people like mother know nothing about beauty.
They represent a social mileu
who know only social repression
of non-Aryan people
having sprung from the Aryan past long long back.
They do not think,
they do not take the human race forward.
What a shame!
