A Forgotten Leader Poem by Asit Kumar Sanyal

A Forgotten Leader

During partition
Muslims were fighting to include Bengal
in Pakistan
after too much of hardship
a leader, Mr. X
influenced Bengal Legislature
to include Hindu part of Bengal with India.
Jinnah said ….
he will not settle partition
if Calcutta not given to Pakistan
communists supported Jinnah
Congress agreed too
ignoring the interest of huge Hindu population.

Calcutta then biggest and richest city in India
Jinha and Bengali Muslims were sure
It will go to Pakistan's share
But Mr. X stood like an iron pillar
Communists went on back foot
Congress became speechless
first time in history capital city of a divided state
not given to the majority
It went to minority Bengali Hindu
Mr. X saved lives and dignity
of five crore Hindus
by keeping western part of Bengal with India.

Today he is almost forgotten in West Bengal
Congress and Communists
levelled him as a communal leader
later he was killed in Kashmir
Because he saved the Hindus of Bengal province
from gradual death and vanishing of existence
as happened in Lahore, Karachi and Dhaka
during last 74 years
history will never forget it
and Mr. X too
the real hero of Hindu Bengali.

Do you know who was Mr. X
His name was Shyama Prasad Mukherjee
son of Ashutosh Mukherjee,
the tiger of Bengal.
