A Countrys' New Anthem Poem by ANTHONY ANIGBATA

A Countrys' New Anthem

A COUNTRYS' NEW ANTHEM

Know someone
If you wish to be rich and mighty in this land
The fruit falls only to
Those who know someone.
The national cake is not for all
It is for only those who know someone
Now the succulent fruit of education falls fast
For those who know or have someone in the government
My brother, please know someone
Poverty will be your portion, if you know nobody.
If you know no one here I reside
Then nothing good will ever come your way.
For you to plant on this our land
You must know someone high up
We are all born in this rich and fertile land
But you must know someone
Before you can eat, your own buttered bread
No one will give you a seat in our party
If you know no one here
Opportunities will open their hand and embrace
You, only when you know someone.
If you must climb up that tree
Know someone here we live. Everything is only for those
Who know someone in high places.
And that is why we are all poor
Assaulted by people at the centre.
Anahoko's child is working in the oil company
Because he has someone there
Afadigbo's son is at the village wasting
Because he has nobody, rich and mighty
I have watched my county go from grace to grass
Tyrants tear its wall with their tridents
Civil war carry her thirty years backwards
But this anthem has killed many more.
Where is the country my mother told me
That is full of equity, justice and fairness?
