Mother's day duty: Show up all pleasant & fruity
For an afternoon of forced smiles & laughs Drove miles to see grandparents, uncles & aunts.
Teasing & taunts All 'good natured fun' And cousinly jaunts - Another beer run
But it's okay, I'm fine I've had a bottle of wine
A family get-together Relatives & awkward pressure
'Where's the boyfriend? ' 'Why haven't you found a man? '
Questions they ask I really can't stand
But after a bottle of wine I'm feeling rather fine
So I answer them: 'I found him... But he isn't really real.'
And they say 'Oh.' And don't know how to feel.
There's some stammers What manners go with such an absurd response?
A cease-fire of questions This silence could be my only chance To escape the barrage of inquisitions I stare off in a hypnotic trance
...
Dear Aunty cracks a joke and the silence is shattered with thankful laughter That someone broke The muteness I was after
I want to pass out on the couch but that's impolite So I'll stand sit or crouch And pretend I'm alright.
After a bottle of wine I'm feeling rather fine.
