A Birthday Cruise Poem by Alison Gaff

A Birthday Cruise

We had a little Birthday treat
A nature trip out in the bay
Although the weathers not bright
We hoped dry that we might stay

Along the coast the boat did run
Beneath the craggy rocks
Where fulmars rest on ledges
And seagulls fly in flocks

If you look hard amongst the rocks
Well camouflaged you'll see
A peregrine sat on its nest
While its partners' hunting tea

The gannets soar so gracefully
With their delicate painted faces
I wish I could fly with them
To all their favourite places

The captain and the crew were great
Pointing out birds here and there
Although no whales or dolphins seen
No-one really seemed to mind

We did see puffins, shearwaters and razorbills
Storm petrels and northern divers too
We really had a lovely trip
Even though we got wet right through.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Inspired by a nostalgic visit to Cornwall with my brother. Although the weather wasn't very good we really enjoyed our boat trip, made all the better by the fantastic boat crew and captain and their knowledge.14/6/16
