A Betting Life Poem by Matthew Holloway

A Betting Life

Do not be drawn to deep into it
yet be free enough to realise
that we are all gamblers of sorts
and chances must be taken
be it in looking for a new job
our choice of friendships
diets, holidays taken
do we discover new worlds
or safely revisit the old ones
do we chose those five a day
or go the flavoursome unhealthy option
a little risk, a little chance, taken
you need to place a part of yourself
on the wheel of fate, sometimes
it is what makes life worth living
giving yourself, spiritually, physically
to the great unknown without fear
going into new ventures
open minded and set free of the chains
we have been taught to place about us
why worry on the thoughts of strangers
why worry what people may say
if you are happy then just do it
better to take that risk, gamble yourself
than be dammed for playing it safe
keep clean, stay legal
sense and sustainability
give just enough, to live another day
risk enough to enjoy the game
without being left broke by it
go, go that extra mile, inch
say those words you keep hidden
if they are kind, they may be well received
and a heartfelt feeling may be returned
roll the dice in the hand
be not afraid to shoot
we are all gamblers in this life
and in time we all win
and in time we all lose
how much are you willing to risk
how much will you bet
on you
