Empty Chair

As alone as two can be
when they're together,
separately felt.
A glance is thought to say so much
but yet is not enough
to cover the miles apart perceived
at opposite ends of a couch
only a kiss could reach.
Such a lonely, vacated space
that we both silently long to fill
but are too afraid.
Equaled in size only in our hearts
and able to be filled
only by each other
in much the same fashion,
one kiss to bridge the gap.
