The War Of 1914-18

I was travellin' ‘round, this old country town
When I saw our name carved in stone on the ground.
'Roll of Honour' it said, and asterisk meant 'dead '
In the war of 1914-18.

When I got home, I called my Dad on the phone,
And I asked him whether he had known
That a man with my name, fought all in vain,
In the war of 1914-18.

And then came the story of my Great Uncle Rory
'enlisted' he said to fight for the glory
'Every man' he would say, was off on his way
to the war of 1914-18.

The world was at war, this had never happened before,
Althought things had got rought in the war with the Boer.
With England in need, he set off with great speed,
To the war of 1914-18.

To Cairo for training, then Flanders bombs raining,
The trenches of Villiers, every ounce draining.
So bravely he tried, like so many he died,
In the war of 1914-18.

So he never came home, he still rests there alone,
In a grave marked just simply 'Soldier - Unknown'
He knew it was right, when he went of to fight,
In the war of 1914-18.

'Roll of honour ' I sighed 'an asterisk meant died
in the war of 1914-18.
