We dealt to one another
The words that are like blades
And tore each others worlds asunder
The peaceful night by storm invades
We spar and thrust and fence, allured
The swords they clang metallic
With every blow endured
The wounds, … in soul inflicted
The Respites seldom, far to short
To mend the lacerated heart
The round anew, our armistice to thwart
Ferocity impart
But now there’s only silence
No more the singing steel
A break within the monstrance
Our parting does reveal
To look at one another
And see such folly entertained
That ones stroke upon the other
Is suicide most awfully gained
