The Coming And Going Of Persephone

She locks you in and slams the door.
Her daily tasks involve blocking the sun
from reaching your frozen heart and turning
your days into months of nights.
She rips all color you once knew from your life
and destroys the views of fire colored autumn
leaves outside your window.

And in its place she gently lays a soft, glistening
layer of pristine, white snow.
She keeps you inside so you can spend time
next to a warm fire with the warmth of loved ones.
And soon she will leave just as she came
Unthanked.
Unthanked
for enriching the soil that now sprouts soft
pasteled tulips and for slowing time down and
letting you see each new hue as it comes to new life.
She knows this is true, and still, next year
She will come.
Unthanked
To do it all again.
