Charlotte Riley Poems

The heavenly tears in her lagoon eyes sparkled, at first Alice thought it was the light; but there was no light in the hall; in fact there wasn’t even a window. “How peculiar? ” announced Alice. Alice scrutinized the room for light and spotted a glistening, jewel-like bottle on a glass table; the blissful glow shone brighter than the selfish moon in its dead night-sky.

“However did I miss such a curious belonging? ” Alice leapt towards the table in delight and pressed her eager fingertips onto the message incarved in the side of the paramount bottle.
...

Where art thou my father?
Who cries in dishonesty.
He feels like a failure
Still deeply I love thee
...

Your eyes lock in
I loose control
The world just passes by.
Your presence grips a hold of me
...

Sometimes I wish I could go to sleep
And never wake back up
Breathing a life of misery
Makes no sense, should be anything but
...

God lay in Heaven
And looked at the world,
With peace and happiness today,
No one fighting or being bad,
...

The world is full of so many undiscovered mysteries.

Histories of lost cultures, extinct species, the past we could not be there to witness; so many stories untold and what we have is merely but a distant memory sinking further away into the deep.
...

Down in my deepest, darkest dreams;
I wake to an unfamiliar voice
Unusual as it seems.
...

In the darkness
They send chills down my spine
The bare descending moon
Has burst into life
...

Defeated faces are bleeding
Rotting in rusted chains
It's crazy what I'm thinking
Still they're eager to remain
...

The silky strings of the soft white Goddess
Glide as one towards the entrance of heavens harmonic gates.

She dances smoothly across them in a swift and peaceful motion

The heavenly tears in her lagoon eyes sparkled, at first Alice thought it was the light; but there was no light in the hall; in fact there wasn’t even a window. “How peculiar? ” announced Alice. Alice scrutinized the room for light and spotted a glistening, jewel-like bottle on a glass table; the blissful glow shone brighter than the selfish moon in its dead night-sky.

“However did I miss such a curious belonging? ” Alice leapt towards the table in delight and pressed her eager fingertips onto the message incarved in the side of the paramount bottle.

The message read “DRINK ME”.

“What’s the harm in trying it? ” laughed Alice. She gulped the divine substance faster than Dinah could beat her at Dinah Time.

Before Alice could place the bottle back on the table, there was a drop. At first she halved in size, but then she levelled with the table; when she reached the height of Dinah, she began to panic. “At this rate I’m going to be extinct! ” whimpered Alice. But Alice didn’t stop there! She kept on un-growing and un-growing till she stood, no taller than the length of the tiny gap, under the door to the beautiful garden.

“Well I sincerely hope this is temporary. I do need to grow up sooner or later” and jumping out of monstrous clothes she wrapped herself in her white napkin and crawled under the door.

In the garden, Alice noticed an abandoned picnic box which had tumbled off a bench beyond her reach. Inside the box, un-squashed, still fresh from insects, sat a donut; the top was covered in icing which read “EAT ME”. “Don’t mind if I do” Alice chuckled, (foolishly expecting the doughnut to redeem her to her usual self.)

The doughnut did more than summon her size, Alice’s hands and feet had transformed into gigantic hooves! Her hair become more silver than Grandma’s, and her brilliant skin, turned to an elegant, soft, shiny, silky white coat. Alice screamed with rage, only to realise that a scream wasn’t the correct term anymore, for Alice was a unicorn.

The voice, which she recognised to be her own, remained a judgemental conscience. Even if she cried, the torment refused to be liberated. Helplessly, Alice forced herself to accept this new inexplicable transmigration.

“You won’t succeed for I shall change no matter how many times you try to force me! ” Alice reasoned as her hooves sent her forth. She galloped into the woods to sniff out a solution.

Faster and further she went into the forest before ever considering how she was to get out. Even as a unicorn with a pointy horn on her head, four sturdy legs and weighing the equivalent of at least six Alice’s; she didn’t feel the slightest bit comfortable. The trees grew thicker; they were so compact that when Alice found the peaceful sky it seemed anything but. It was blackening as fast as her cynical faith. If it wasn’t for the lonely moon in the inert night-sky, Alice would consider it a black hole, ready to banish her from the world in any given moment. (Not that it made much difference, now she was a girl inside the body of a unicorn, stranded in the depths of the claustrophobic forest, which she had entered under a door!)

The beautiful Garden of Eden embarked a new identity in the hours of darkness. The purity of her sensitive hearing overthrew Alice as she dashed passed trees, creeping behind her every forsaken step; the frequencies of unspecified creatures from Alice’s furry ears seemed as peaceful as the premonition of demoniac laughter’s.

In the distance Alice spotted her melancholy reflection in a rippling river. The clenched thirst of her gasping mouth lured her in. (Not knowing what chance she had of finding something to devour, she thought it better to swallow enough water to last her through the night.)

She bowed down to her new-born mythical figure. Behind her appeared a creature which resembled the grim-reaper! Alice’s hooves froze to the rotting soil; she witnessed his every move in the mirror of the mysterious moonlit waters as he loomed savagely towards her.

The rush of crimson rich blood drained from her drawn-out throat. Her bountiful senses slowly froze to the temperature of an icy cavern. The cold, black-cloaked figure grasped onto the inadequate inches of her life, she shrank to the size of her beloved Dinah…

Flash! Crash!

Alice’s weak eyes flickered… by her side sat two young boys in black and red striped robes. Beside them sat a humongous, scruffy slavering dog. The two bombarded Alice with more questions than she’d demand from her monotonous teacher.

“You were a unicorn we saved you from Voldemort! We gave you a chocolate frog to make you better and you turned into a girl! ” Alice couldn’t quite grasp what the scrawny, blonde snobbish boy was asking of her.

The overwhelming journey she endured greatly puzzled poor Alice, but the questions persisted. Alice sat up and enquired to herself; where in heavens was she now?
