I'll Be Home For Christmas Poem by Katherine H. Belle

I'll Be Home For Christmas

What do you do
When your body is in a place
That your heart is not?

You walk around
Like an empty shell
With a smile plastered on your face
Forced, though it may be.

Going through the motions
Of a monotonous life
When half a world away
Your heart lies beating
Outside of its chest
Longing for people
That are not there

The children ask when you will be home
And all you can muster is 'soon'
Though you know that's not true

You may never come home
Not for Christmas
Not ever

It's the simple lie that you tell yourself
That you tell everyone
That keeps you comforted at night
That gives you hope
For happiness once again.

Soon
You say
Soon
