Carry Me Home Poem by ian burns

Carry Me Home

how come i never knew you,
Yet we lived so close
you challenged me,
broke me,
loved me,
guarded my way.
but father,
you were too far off to see
I lost your purpose
gripped on tightly to my own,
a blanket to comfort me,
a distant memory

carry me home

politician's voice,
echo's
beneath what you
knew to be truth.
I saw a different hue
hazy,
confused,
troubled... at first,
but blinding clarity
now masks uncertainty

carry me home

Difference, without pain
wishful in thought.
decipher our hearts,
through words
screamed
protracted
truthful!
bitter to taste,
but sweet to remember.

carry me home

a protector, a father,
lost to youthful pleasures,
so... long past.
love never spoken
by lips too proud,
not by a father,
but within a son's guarded
shame.

carry me home

what was then, i see so clear,
defiant child, now hidden from view
open and heartfelt plea,
lament,
cry,
father
please come...

carry me home
