Breaking The Law Poem by Donna Pelan

Breaking The Law

Back in the early 90`s
I came across some seeds for pot
Had never tried to grow a plant before
I thought I might give it a shot

The fact that it was illegal
Made it too teppting, you see
I always liked living on the edge a bit
Could never stand monotony

So I started two seeds on the window sill
One grew to a healthy plant` without a flaw
So I planted it outdoors when the weather allowed
There was a certain excitement in breaking the law

Now we were planning a pool party
Out in our back yard
With guests coming of all ages
To hide that plant would have been hard

So we cut down this plant of mine
And hung it in the garage away up high
We put it in a huge paper bag
And left it there to dry

I told the family it was garbaged
And they took me at my word
Mom wouldn`t pull one over on them
To harvest it would have been absurd

Late in the fall we took it down
And rolled it in some papers we`d bought
And at christmas time they sat under the tree
Addressed to all, it was quite a shock

The family were all young adults by then
And not that easy to fool
But to have their mom pull this off
Was just a way too cool

We kind of forgot about it over the years
Except occasionally, now and then
They related the story to their friends
And had a laugh all over again

Now I must admit it happened once more
About a dozen years later, or so
We happened accross this poor little plant
That needed a place to grow

So I offered up my back yard
And the specimen grew very tall and wide
I was hoping my neighbors wouldn`t look over the fence
As the plant was too big to hide

I tried placing tall plants in front of it
But it still stuck out at the top
I was worried at the tim it would be detected
I might get charged with having a 'grow op'

We were having a company look after our yard
Fertilizing and mowing our lawn
Each time the young man did our back yard
I figured the pot plant would be gone

The tension just became too much
For this somewhat older female
I could imagine the headlines in the local paper
Grandma busted and sent off to jail

So I called someone to come get the plant
And she took it away in her trunk
I understand that for quite sometime
The inside of her car really stunk

Now there should be a moral to this story
And I did learn a lesson for a while
But I believe your actions are your destiny
And in the search for immorality
When someone asks, what are you up to now
I`ll just look them in the eye and smile
ortality
