'You Are Not Alone' Poem by Trevor Valentine

'You Are Not Alone'

'You are not Alone'
by Valentine

You are not alone
Not exactly an original message
And certainly not an original poem
But all the same
For you it is
Unique

That I care for you
May or may not help
You may or may not
Even want my care
Or love
But I can't help it
I do

Distance
Does not factor
For I have a special
Power
To be there
Right there beside you
Looking through
Your eyes
Looking inside
Your heart
I feel and live
Vicariously
Within you
And I hope you are stronger
For this love

When you think you are alone
You are not
My friend
For I am with you
I am part of your spirit
And will not let you
Fall
Or waiver
I will pick you up
And guide
And hearten
And think
With you
For you

Can you feel me?

Is there room in your soul
For two?

And when you pick up
Your skirts
Metaphorically
And join with others
Strengthened
Let me say
There is no greater joy
For my job
It is done
And you are
For now at least
Mended
And spirited
And purposed
And fulfilling
And challenged
And what's more
You are content

I smile with you

We are not alone.

The 'reply from 'Devon':

i think if you held this poem up to a mirror, this is what you would see.

my will

You're not what makes the world revolve
You're just what makes it warm
You make my world a safer place
Where I will fear no harm
I know you're just a person like me
But you let me call you friend
And I haven't had a lot of those
Not in places where I've been
Please don't ever underestimate
The gifts you have to give
Your love shows me that I have worth
And revives my will to live

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
It is possible to help others through poetry. Especially if, as in this case, the other person is a poet too. 'Devon' escaped the vilest form of child abuse you could ever imagine, and I mean 'ever'.
