Yesterdays Man Poem by Rafael Cazares

Yesterdays Man

The man of yesterday came to me in my most unexpected hour. A longing in my heart ached though I knew not what it was. We settled, sorted and mirrored our eyes for some moments without the utterances of words in the timeless, inseparable language of kindred spirits:

‘The path I followed unto you simply did not recline straightaway'
‘Though these eyes are keen I could not find you without hardships of my own;
Such vast distances & mutilations have you overcome, bold wayfarer.'
‘I knew someday you would silently call upon me,
Though, that was needless.'
‘But how you've longed for me in the remotest regions of your ageing heart;
I ask: How many more suns and moons have blessed their light upon your countenance since our time? '
‘As soon as I make my presence known, you expect from me
Fruits of wisdom sowed from yesterday.'
‘But it is you who have given to yourself what I return.
Though you live now, it is yesterday your heart yearns.'
