Wonderful Christmas Poem by Andrew Matthews

Wonderful Christmas

It's been a wonderful Christmas
Presents and trifle and cheeses
and booze and turkey and cheers
Shaking hands and kissing cheeks
I'd been looking forward to it for weeks.

Everyone praying for it to snow
Down the hill on the sled we'll go
Snowball fights and nipping fingers
with that Christmassy feeling
you wish would linger.

Then it's back inside to get warm
The fire beckons everyone to swarm
Back to the beers or whisky or both
Back to the music, blaring in your ears
Who'll vomit first, the host fears.

Then in the morning and your head is throbbing
Conversing with God on the big white telephone.
A cup of tea and big greasy fry
'I can't wait until the New Year'
'Oh God, why oh why? '
