William Henry Davies Poem by Francis Duggan

William Henry Davies

A wandering man he worked and tramped his way
Through Canada and through the U.S.A.
And he oft times slept under the open sky
But there was more to him than met the eye.

He damaged his foot whilst jumping off a train
And amputation caused him years of pain
And how he suffered the poor chap god knows
But like a man he took life's painful blows.

He won world acclaim as a lyric poet
And more than seven hundred poems he wrote
His complete poems numbered 749
And to his credit not one slipshod line.

So many great poems from his majic hand
He wrote the rhymes a child could understand
His lyrics born of true simplicity
Which is the hall mark of good poetry.

The life story read like strange ficticious tales
Of the legendary super tramp of Wales
From obscurity he rose to literary fame
And 'William Henry Davies' was his name.
