Why Is My Heart Broken? Poem by Osceola Waters

Why Is My Heart Broken?

Rating: 5.0

Why Is My Heart Broken?

Why is my heart broken?
Oh why do I cry?
Why was so many lies uttered?

Oh why were my people displaced?
Oh why oh why was the sacred hoop broken?
Why do I cry?
Why is my heart broken?

Where oh where are our lands now,
Will we be forgotten?
I see my lands in my memory,
I feel my pain with my heart,
Oh why is my heart broken?
Why do I cry?

Why oh why were our lands taken?
When oh when will I see my family again?
When will we be united?
When will I see day light again?
When will this darkness end?

Oh why is my heart broken?
Why—why do I cry?
I can not hold back emotion,
I hold in me deep devotion,
I hold back anger,
I hold at bay temptation,

When will this night mare end?
When will my heart mend?
Oh why is my heart broken?
When will the lies cease?
Will the white man change?
Like a tree in the wind –bend,
Trust like a broken fence—mend.
Why is my heart broken?
