Who Holds You Now, I Wonder Poem by Wenjun Liu

Who Holds You Now, I Wonder

Rating: 5.0

Sharp crescent pierced the starless sky
A pale slit on an obsedian eye.
Following to the end of this crooked lane,
I did return to th' forest of Mourning Jeyne.
We should've heed the warning, and
Ventured not beyond the trees.
Who holds you now, I wonder, behind those boughs and leaves?

Ten for the years of us apart,
Nine you were when I saw you last.
Branches twists and hugs alike
Reaching up to a heaven that has but one ethereal light.
You touched the truck upon many a time
Smooth ivory skin
Against the charred-like all warts and knots limb.
Your smell lingers still
Among the scent of autumn and dew.
Who holds you now, I wonder, against winter and crude chill?

Eight times the bell chimed its due
Seven stars could not light the fear your silence made real.
How I want to start calling again
Like so many years ago, just to chase away the throttling quietness closing in.
But why should the world keep its merry little sound,
When your absence takes the air out of all the place around?
After you, I could never stay at one place for long.
I felt the laughter in these far-away towns
And when I tried it, 't tastes bitter, felt alien and all wrong.
Who holds you now, I wonder, in the silence where you used to sing many a tuneless song?

Six, five, four, I starts counting like before
Silence' no longer silent, and my heart races forward
In many a feverish dream, I've heard your feet padding toward.
But none turned real,
So I catch myself before hope I am allowed to feel.
A dark figure I make out, as air begins to chill
My sight blurs and slowly stills,
It approaches into the light, my heart's desire made real.
Shut the curtain and turn the moon out
And I will recognize you from a thousand miles about.
Ice blue eyes I gazes into
Where emptyness stares back out
Are you really here, or have you gone all these years
When sense urges me to flee, I step forward and draw near.
Who holds you through all these years, made you cold and hid the soul I hold most dear?

Three, two, one
Come back to me,
Even as ice and empty mist
I hold you now, against a world dark and real,
And the nights holds no fear now
As leaves hides not single drop of tear.
