What Were We? Poem by Kondwani Simwaba

What Were We?

What were we?
We were hope under the sun, we gave light to the moon to shine in the night;
We were the Crescent that the stars looked upto for hope,
We were beauty unfathomable, ofcourse we were dope.
We were the energy that gave life to the cosmos,
For us, there wasn't an impediment to grandiose;
Never in our vocabulary did there ever exist adios,
Until my folly pulled the plug that led us into comatose.
We'd occasionally lose our grip just to start anew;
A Love so askew,
We'd never really bid adieu;
We were perfect for each other like Reds go together until I made her blue,
It was quite the uncanny hue;
Because now my Chess board is one less of a Queen,
So how have I this Kingdom to rule when all I remember;
Was a checkmate cue?
